AMES, IOWA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0The Iowa Water Center (IWC) annually administers a statewide grant competition known\u00a0as the IWC Graduate Student Research Competition.<\/p>\n

The purpose of this funding is to enable graduate students to complete additional research objectives beyond the scope of their current work, with an emphasis on submitting their research to peer-reviewed publications.<\/p>\n

Tania Leung<\/b>\u00a0has been selected among three other graduate students from across Iowa. She and the other recipients will receive funding for a variety of proposed research.<\/p>\n

Leung\u2019s proposed research\u00a0encompasses\u00a0harmful algal blooms and cyanobacteria in Iowa\u2019s waters.\u00a0It is titled \u2018Determining the Effects of Co-Nutrient Availability on Harmful Algal Blooms Across Varying Lake Types\u2019.<\/p>\n

Associate Director of the IWC Melissa Miller says, \u201cWater Resources Research Institutes like the Iowa Water Center were authorized by Congress in part to address emerging water resources concerns through research. Ms. Leung\u2019s research investigates a question that water professionals in this region posed during a recent public discussion on harmful algal blooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m most looking forward to are the results of this research,\u201d Leung says.\u00a0\u201cFor example, do iron concentrations vary from lake to lake? And if so, why? Is it geologically impacted or not? And if these iron concentrations\u00a0do vary from lake to lake, then the next question: Do these\u00a0harmful algal\u00a0blooms also vary in terms of how intense they are? And if they are very intense, do the toxins vary?\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller says, \u201cThis is an excellent example of the value of creating feedback loop between the research community with professionals and engaged citizens in order to rapidly respond to pressing issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Get to Know\u00a0<\/b>Tania Leung<\/b>, PhD\u00a0<\/b>Candidate<\/b>\u00a0at<\/b>\u00a0Iowa State University<\/b><\/p>\n

Leung is from a small town in southern Florida about 5 or 6 hours north of Key West called Lauderhill.\u00a0She received\u00a0both her bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees at\u00a0Florida Atlantic University.<\/p>\n

During\u00a0her\u00a0master\u2019s, Leung\u00a0discovered her\u00a0passion for water quality and\u00a0decided to\u00a0pursue this interest with a PhD in geology and\u00a0environmental\u00a0sciences\u00a0at Iowa State University\u00a0(ISU).<\/p>\n

\u201cI always knew I wanted to do a PhD, but I just didn\u2019t know where. So,\u00a0I started my research\u00a0by\u00a0looking for professors\u00a0who\u00a0shared similar interests as me\u00a0regarding\u00a0water quality,\u201d says Leung.\u00a0She\u00a0found what she was searching for.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a professor at ISU who had a\u00a0project that\u00a0was\u00a0looking\u00a0into\u00a0harmful algal blooms. She was\u00a0trying to see if the iron content or concentrations in the lake water\u00a0contribute\u00a0to harmful algal blooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coming from Florida, Leung was familiar with widespread harmful algal blooms along the coast. However,\u00a0she\u00a0hadn\u2019t heard of these blooms being inland until she came to\u00a0ISU. She\u00a0says\u00a0this inland perspective\u00a0in\u00a0Iowa has\u00a0given her, \u201cnew insight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leung\u2019s\u00a0adviser,\u00a0Elizabeth\u00a0Swanner,\u00a0saw\u00a0on Twitter\u00a0back in September\u00a0a tweet\u00a0about the IWC\u2019s\u00a0Graduate\u00a0Student Research Competition.\u00a0Swanner\u00a0then\u00a0ran the idea by Leung.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell I never thought a tweet of all things,\u201d Leung says. \u201cNormally I think we as graduate students look for agencies that are\u00a0looking for grants that we can apply to,\u00a0but this is interesting that my adviser saw\u00a0something on\u00a0Twitter. That was a fun and surprising moment when\u00a0she\u00a0told me that.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of Leung\u2019s favorite hobbies is cooking. \u201cI took up cooking during my master\u2019s. I love trying new recipes and figuring out what works and what doesn\u2019t,\u201d Leung says.<\/p>\n
